Course Outline

Part I. Why do we really need to interview?

We begin the workshop with an overview of the interview process and talking about some good (and bad) experiences we've all had. We'll look at things from the interviewer's perspective and learn what interviews actually measure. We'll also look at the various types of interviews.  Practical exercises will allow you to start reflecting on how you respond in each.

Part II. What are they really asking?

Navigating through the interview can be a challenge, but it helps to know what the motivations are behind each question. Here we'll look at many of the most frequently asked questions and develop the skills for you to identify what the interviewer is really asking. We'll run drills to make sure you can quickly and painlessly dissect the questions and analyze your interviewer's intent.

Part III. What are you really saying? Managing yourself in the interview process.

Now that you know what you're being asked, it's time to think about what you're actually answering. We'll not only examine your word choice, but also talk about the art and science of metacommunication.

Part IV. Interviewing in Switzerland & Special Situations

After a well deserved lunch break, we'll ease back into the seminar by looking at the cultural aspects of interviewing in Switzerland. What is expected in your culture of origin may be innapropriate in Basel. Let's see how many "norms" you get right! Then we'll talk about how you can handle those 1% outlier situations that always seem to happen 100% of the time!

Part V. Applying what you've learned with practice, practice, practice!

We'll work in groups and bring it all together. You'll practice by answering the tough questions and you'll get to see the process and progress from the outside looking in.
